I have had a Golden Retriever and a Dachshund. Golden's are no doubt very smart and loyal dogs. But the dachshund ( mini ) is a very good lap dog and a comedy show on its own. It is true they think that they can rule the world, they don't know how small they are. I think that gives them a great heart, or a dumb brain but I love both 03/13/2008 19:29

I have a Golden Retriever...best dog for kids...gentle with them, yet protective...good for 'effect' when you condsider intruders...BIG BARK and BIG PRESENCE...very loyal dog..I also have a Jack Russell Terrier...SMART,FAST, great dog once you get past that first year...but DO tend to enjoy a kill..my yard is now MOLE FREE...and rabbit, and snake,and squirrels are quite nervous ! 03/13/2008 12:03

we have retrievers and have had dachshunds… would prefer retrievers any day over dachshund. The dachshund is smart but over possessive and more territorial. I wouldn't want to get bit over displining my children. Retrievers are much more kid friendly in my opinion. 02/21/2008 18:20

Four paws down....why vote any longer? Goldens ARE the top breed. Our second golden is beside me… always my friend. Goldens are all about pleasing their family. They know our every mood....On the night our first golden died, he struggled to get up and snuggle with us. We had no idea he was so sick. Goldens want nothing more than our love....just make sure you have a good vacuum! 02/21/2008 15:14

We have both! Wiener dogs rock too! drpepper4me56's comment is so true. The wiener is the early warning system, the golden only barks when necessary. Wiener dogs do not know that they are small. They keep up with the big dogs and will usually be the "boss". I read in a book about wieners "if you want a dog who will love you with every fiber of its being, get a golden retriever."
